Sternbräu’s history of more than 600 years

This house which was already then named the “Sternhaus Inn” in the Trabergasse Street (now Getreidegasse) was probably built in the mid-13th Century

1415: the brewery was founded.

1542: 1st documentation of the name Stern­bräu. Continual extension made to the brewery towards the old town walls.  

1777: W. A. Mozart spends many happy hours at the Sternbräu.

1810: The name of the brewery buildings – “Goldener Stern”

about 1900: originate the paintings from Karl Reisenbichler, these were painted in exchange for food and lodgings at the Sternbräu.  

1907: the brewery is transferred to Riedenburg in Salzburg and the owners dedicate themselves now only to the well-being of their guests.

1929-1931: the complete business is bought by the Austrian Brewery Company and generously converted into a large restaurant.  

1979: the Sternbräu opens the 1st Beer-Pub named Braumeister. Together with the owners a new concept is developed which is to combine a number of different types of restaurant all under one roof.

1986-1988: several alterations and adjustments are made. The “Stern Beer Garden receives its new looks and the Trattoria La Stella is opened. .

In 2000 the Sternsaal Room was adapted especially for theatre and cabaret performances as well as the daily “Sound of Music Dinner Show“ and has become a much sought-after culture and event centre in Salzburg’s Old Town.

2006: Magister Harald Kratzer takes over the traditional company together with his wife Dr. Christine Bitschnau.

2007: opening of the bar: Abendstern as well as the Sterninsel. The Sternbräu has become one of Austria’s largest catering businesses with seating for up to 780 people and an additional 670 people in the beer gardens.

2039: Aliens choose the “Sternbräu Gourmet World” as their culinary base on earth…
